Diagnostic description.

Male. Body size 4.0 (4.0–5.0) mm, fore wing length 3.3 (3.5–4.0) mm (Fig. 51); colouration black except mandibles, scape, pedicel, fore and mid legs yellow, flagellomeres and hind legs dark brown, metasoma dark brown except cream patch dorsal margin T1; forewings hyaline (Fig. 52G), hind wing veins spectral; head shape quadrate, width 1.4 (1.3–1.4) × length, postocular space 0.6 (0.5–0.6) × eye length in dorsal view (Fig. 52C), raised transverse carina above toruli absent, malar space 0.2 (0.3–0.4) × height of eye (Fig. 52E); length of scape 1.2 (1.1–1.2) × length of pedicel, 1st flagellomere 1.1 (1.1–1.4) × length of scape, 0.6 (0.6–0.7) × 2nd flagellomere; mesosoma length 1.5 (1.4–1.5) × height, mesoscutum in lateral view rounded antero-dorsally (Fig. 52D); mesoscutum length 0.8 (0.8) × width in dorsal view (Fig. 52E); medial lobe rugulose; 2-Rs+M 1.2 (1.3–1.5) × 1-Rs+M, three hamuli, equidistant (Fig. 52G); metasoma clavate; T1+T2 length 3.3 (2.3–2.5) × width in dorsal view.

Material examined.

Holotype. AUSTRALIA – Victoria • ♂, "29.07S 167.57E Philip Island, Upper Long Valley [Victoria], 20-24 Nov. 1984, I.D. Naumann" (ANIC).

Paratypes. – Victoria • 3 ♂♂, same location and dates, I.D. Naumann and L. Hill leg. (ANIC).

Distribution.

This species is known only from the type locality Philip Island, Victoria (Fig. 92).

Biology.

Unknown.

Notes.

Aulacus insularis is currently known only from male specimens and has not been associated with females of other known Australian species.
