Anatoborus G. A. Milledge Gen. nov.
Type species: Anatoborus grayi sp. nov.
Diagnosis.
Male palp simple, with elongate, only partially flattened embolus and no conductor or tegular apophyses, cymbium with distal extension. Male lacking distal crook on tibia 1 and stridulatory apparatus on endites. ALE reduced but present in both sexes, AME of male on only small tubercules. Females with weakly sclerotised genitalia, simple lobe over genital openings and a single spermatheca at the end of copulatory duct.

Etymology. The genus name is derived from the Greek anatos, meaning harmless and boros meaning bite. Contrasting with Uloborus which means deadly bite (“Uloborus.” Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, Merriam-Webster, https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Uloborus. Accessed 20 Nov. 2024).
Remarks.
The studies of Opell (1979) and Coddington (1990) conclude that Waitkera Opell 1979 and Lehtineniana Sherwood 2022 are likely basal taxa in Uloborid phylogeny, due to the presence of several primitive genitalic characters. Waitkera includes a single species from New Zealand described by Opell (1979) and Lehtineniana (previously Tangaroa Lehtinen 1967) includes five species from various Pacific Islands, described by Berland (1924 & 1934), Opell (1983) and Salvatierra et al (2015). Coddington (1990) concluded that the male palp of Waitkera was more likely to be closer to the primitive uloborid palp and that Lehtineniana was derived as it lacked all tegular apophyses other than the embolus.
The male palp of the species described here is similar to Lehtineniana in that it lacks other tegular apophyses but it lacks the other diagnostic characters of Lehtineniana, i.e, the male stridulatory apparatus and the distal crook on the ventral surface of tibia 1 and the lack of ALE. The female genitalia, in contrast to all other Uoboridae except Lehtineniana, lack external modifications. However, internally, each copulatory duct leads a single spermatheca, contrasting with a pair of spermathecae found in Lehtineniana. Therefore the erection of a new genus for this taxon is necessary.
